The McGavock House sits behind a chain-link fence at the corner of Meridian and Vaughn in Cleveland Park, a two-story brick house built in the 1840s by a man whose son became Nashville's mayor at 25. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2007. For more than four years now it has also been the answer to a question a lot of East Nashville residents keep asking: didn't a brewery buy that place?
The answer is more complicated than yes or no.
The McGavock House Proposal
In March 2022, local investors under the direction of Elliott Kyle filed rezoning paperwork for the 0.85-acre Cleveland Park property, and word got out that Birmingham-based Good People Brewing Company was planning to turn the historic house into a craft beer bar with outdoor seating. By late 2023, the plan had a permit attached to it: $445,000 in renovations covering facade repairs, a new covered rear porch, a basement dining area, and two additional buildings meant to frame the original house.
None of it got built. In September 2024, Kyle confirmed to the Nashville Post that the McGavock House was on the market for sale and, separately, still available to lease. He declined to say what had happened to the brewery plans, and Good People's co-owner couldn't be reached for comment. That's the last confirmed word on the project.
Here's the part that matters if you live nearby. A Visit Music City guide to new Nashville restaurants, last updated in July 2026, still lists Good People Brewing's McGavock House taproom as an upcoming opening. No opening timeline has been confirmed.
Crazy Gnome's Move
On the other side of the neighborhood, in Inglewood, a much smaller brewery finished the exact kind of move Good People never completed.
Crazy Gnome opened on Main Street in East Nashville in August 2020, delayed first by the March 2020 tornado that tore through the area and then by the pandemic that followed it. The brewery built a following there for almost five years, hosting weekly trivia and comedy nights out of a nano-brewery taproom. On March 1, 2025, owner Grayson Miller threw a farewell party called The Main (St) Event and closed the original location for good, moving the whole operation into a larger building at 1005 W. Kirkland Ave. The new taproom has been open long enough now to have settled into a routine: Wednesday through Friday happy hour runs 4 to 7 p.m. with five-dollar pints, and the old Main Street space has since become home to Stoke Haus Brewing and Barbecue.
That completed move is one example of the neighborhood’s recent business activity.
Recent Business Activity
Another recent opening is Lost & Found at 3104 Gallatin Pike in Inglewood, an open-air gathering space built out of stacked shipping containers and permanently parked food trucks, with a dedicated lawn for casual visits.
The lineup reads like a list of East Nashville's own alumni going brick-and-mortar for the first time. Pizza Lolo, the pop-up pizza concept, finally has a permanent home there. Chivanada serves Colombian empanadas, The Pepper Pott brings Guyanese and Caribbean cooking, QBOP! does Korean fusion bowls, and Katrin Taqueria handles the LA-style tacos. Birdie's pours wine and Fortunate Sun handles cocktails, with Retrograde Coffee rolling up early for anyone who needs caffeine before any of it.
By late May 2026, the vendors had expanded their hours to cover lunch, something most of them hadn't offered when the park first opened. The food trucks and Pizza Lolo now open at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday, Fortunate Sun starts pouring at 11 a.m., and Retrograde opens at 7 a.m. every single day. The expanded hours give visitors more daytime options.
A few blocks over, S.S. Gai has drawn attention for its food and recent recognition. The Thai fried chicken counter built its reputation inside The Wash, a converted car wash turned food hall, and picked up a Michelin Bib Gourmand nod in the 2025 guide. Owners Chris and Emma Biard are opening a standalone location at 1106 Chester Ave sometime in 2026, a 1,300-square-foot house already painted the restaurant's signature green, with room for a small bar program and a backyard the food hall never had. That recognition came while the restaurant was still operating inside The Wash.

The Greenway Has Its Own Version of This Gap

In late July 2026, Metro Parks closed a section of the Stones River Greenway between the Kohl's Greenway Trailhead and the first bridge behind the baseball fields off Jackson Downs Boulevard, citing an eroding embankment. No repair timeline has been given. If your usual loop runs that stretch, plan on a detour rather than assuming an app will route you around it automatically.
Starting in mid-July 2026, officers on ATVs began patrolling more than 100 miles of Nashville's greenway system, alongside a new round of security cameras at trailheads.
What's on the Calendar Before Halloween
Here are several fall events scheduled before Halloween:
- Fridays, September 11 through October 16: the fall pop-up beer garden series returns to Shelby Park, run jointly by East Nashville Beer Works and Friends of Shelby Park & Bottoms, with free admission, local beer, food trucks, live music, and yard games.
- Thursday, September 3, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Superbloom at Sunset, a free evening walk through Shelby Bottoms Nature Center timed to the park's late-summer sunflower bloom.
Looking ahead to Thanksgiving weekend: the fifth annual Full Belly Friends of Shelby 5K and Fun Run, East Nashville's own holiday tradition, raising money and collecting food for neighbors who need it.
